Giving back feels good.
That was the sentiment of volunteers recognized on April 12 at Healdsburg District Hospital for their long service.
Lunch was provided for the volunteers, and board members and politicians praised the group of women for their work.
“We are so lucky to have all of you,” State Sen. Mike McGuire said before the meal.
He thanked individuals who had put in decades — or close to it — of service with his signature enthusiasm.
Healdsburg Mayor David Hagele, who noted to laughs that McGuire was a tough act to follow, stepped up next to share how much the ladies’ volunteer efforts meant to the community.
“It’s people like you who really make the difference,” he said.
Before lunch was served, one volunteer noted that there was another group that deserved recognition: the kitchen staff, who make the best hospital food ever, according to the statement.
Volunteer Stephanie JC Gibbs had high praise for the volunteers.
“The group of women here are marvelous,” she said. “I’ve really enjoyed the support we give each other.”
Gibbs said she began volunteering at schools but transitioned to the hospital when her kids got sick of seeing her on campus.
“It’s been a wonderful opportunity to be a volunteer here at Healdsburg Hospital,” volunteer Elisia Jorge said. “It’s a great way to serve the community and all the patients that are here.”
Volunteer Jennie Pearl Reese said, “It’s helped me as much as I’ve helped the patients.”
And though they don’t do it for the praise, the ceremony still meant a lot.
“It’s wonderful to be appreciated like this. This is a very special moment in my life,” volunteer Pat Myers said.
