Jean Pfaffenberger Jones, 84, passed away on June 10, 2008, in
San Diego, California. She lived a full and colorful life. A
memorial service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2008, at 2 p.m.
at El Cajon Mortuary, 684 South Mollison Ave. in El Cajon (corner
of Mollison & Washington).
Jean was born on June 27, 1923, in Healdsburg. She grew up in
Healdsburg and attended business college in that area after
graduating from Healdsburg High in 1941. She married Robert A (Bob)
Pfaffenberger in 1946. They settled in nearby Windsor where they
had three children — Terry, Barbara, and Richard, and where they
owned and operated a family grocery, Bob’s Market. They lived a
rural life where the children grew up enjoying country living.
Especially memorable to Jean’s children in their younger years was
summertime swimming and fishing at the nearby Russian River.
The family moved to Healdsburg in 1965, after which Jean worked
for many years in banking and became an avid hiking enthusiast with
the Sierra Club. She and Bob retired and moved to Hemet,
California, in 1980, but later divorced. Jean married Cecil Jones
in 1984 and the couple spent many years of retirement in Hemet.
They were avid hikers, campers, backpackers, and bicycling
enthusiasts. After Cecil passed away in 1997, Jean moved to
Lakeside, California, near San Diego, closer to her children.
Jean was an accomplished piano and accordion player. She had an
ear for music and played without ever reading written music. She
was also an expert swimmer. She was very active and athletic her
entire life, until the last three years when she was confined to a
care facility. She also loved cats and always had one.
Jean is survived by her son, Terry Pfaffenberger of El Cajon,
her daughter, Barbara Pfaffenberger Aliaga of Concord, CA, her son
Richard Pfaffenberger of San Diego, and her granddaughter, Sophia
Aliaga of Concord, CA. She will be very much missed by all.
