Fall at the library
Everybody’s getting ready for school days — including the library now that we’re done with the summer programs. Our thanks go out to all who participated in our summer reading programs this year.
Because of the generosity of the Sonoma County Library Foundation, we were able to hand out several fabulous prizes.
The adult prizes included gift certificates to Dry Creek Kitchen, Plaza Gourmet, Copperfields Books, and the Raven Film Center — prizes that went to Petra Boardman, Pia Banerjea, Lea Banks, and Catalina Campbell—they each read a lot of books this summer.
If you didn’t win a prize this time, definitely try again. We’ll have more prizes next year and probably try a few new things. It was a successful program for all ages. The kids had a lot of fun at the end-of-summer event.
We are gearing up for a September of library card signups. The American Library Association has deemed September Library Card Signup Month and we hope if you haven’t come by the library lately, you’ll give us a try. Your library card is good for a lot more than just words on paper and we would love to tell you about all that we have to offer.
America’s Wine: The Legacy of Prohibition
The Wine Library, with support of the Friends of the Sonoma County Wine Library, is getting ready to host a film screening of “America’s Wine: The Legacy of Prohibition” on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
The screening will take place at the Raven Film Center, 415 Center Street. This film screening is free and open to the public. The film’s central focus is the rebuilding process of the wine industry following Prohibition and the continuing impact of that period on the wine industry as well as the American public at large.
Later in the 55-minute film, in perhaps the most amazing section, the filmmakers took part in a 75th Anniversary event for Repeal and conducted a series of interviews with several notable wine industry pioneers — in some cases, their only appearance on film. Those interviewed include Dr. Kevin Starr, Ernest Gallo, Robert Mondavi, Brother Timothy, Abe Buchman, Dan Turrentine, Leon Panetta, and more.
The film will be introduced and a post-screening discussion will be conducted by Carla De Luca Worfolk, the director, executive producer and writer of the film. We are lucky to have an opportunity to meet with Carla, an Emmy-award-winning television and documentary producer whose career with CNN and beyond has included such roles as independent producer, magazine editor, writer, public relations executive, and paralegal.
We are very thankful for the Bancroft Library, our Regional Oral History Office, and its California Wine History Collection for embarking on this documentary film project in commemoration of Repeal and providing it for us to present to you as a free-to-the-public event.
Many of you are accustomed to tasting wine and having a bite to eat at our events — which you’ll be able to do, courtesy of the Raven’s fine selection of wines and food for purchase in the lobby.
