From the Library

If you are looking for something to do for free over the next couple of months, the library is hosting 49 events in February and 46 in March. “Busy” is too mild a word to describe the activity level right now. That said, we are excited about all of the different events and are looking forward to seeing you. The following are a few highlights we really don’t want you to miss.
On Wednesday, Feb. 20, we offer two events featuring the acclaimed author Dashka Slater, whose nine books join her career in journalism. Her articles have appeared in Newsweek, Salon, The New York Times Magazine and Mother Jones. Both events will center around her 2017 book “The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives.” In this book, Slater tells the true story of race, class, gender, high school and the horrific crime that happened in 2013 on an AC Transit bus in Oakland. The first event of the day will be a special Teen Book Club meeting for young adults in grades 7 through 12 taking place at 4 p.m. A second event for adults is a seminar and discussion around the same book. This discussion will offer an opportunity to meet the author and learn about the topic as well as to purchase her books. The discussion will start at 6 p.m. also on Feb. 20.
Do you happen to know of any K-12 students — or are you a K-12 student — who could benefit from a little assistance with homework? Throughout the school year, we offer a Homework Help program with tutors available to help with all subjects, every week on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Often this year we have had more tutors available than students looking for help, but we are pretty sure that more are in need. Don’t be afraid to drop in and give it a try.
AARP Tax-Aide has once again started up its Tax Help program at the library. We are pleased to co-sponsor this popular service, available every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. until April 10. The format will follow the same general pattern as in previous years, in which those seeking tax assistance need only bring their documents to the library in the morning to get on the list for that day and receive a scheduled time. For a full list of necessary documents, consult the library’s website at sonomalibrary.org or come to the library for a flyer.
Along the same line of providing a little help with common problems, the library is offering a Job Seeker Help series. This drop-in opportunity is for anyone needing help with resume writing, interview skills, ideas for hunting for jobs or how to use LinkedIn. No question is too small for this opportunity. This one-on-one assistance with a experienced human resources professional is available on the first and third Saturdays of March and April from 2 to 4 p.m.
Many of you have now attended one of our sessions about the Lulzbot 3-D printer we have available for public use. We would invite you to sign up for a time to print something. Whether you want to try printing a little trinket or there is a special tool you need around the house, the 3-D printer may be used for free by making an appointment. We have moved our appointment scheduling online; to book yourself a time, visit https://sonomacounty.libcal.com/booking/healdsburg-3d-printerwhere you may select an available date and time to work on your print
