Editor: I read with pleasure the commentary by Windsor resident
Richard Gaines in the February 19 issue of the Windsor Times. I was
especially pleased that he consistently pointed out that George W.
Bush was not elected president, rather he was put in office
illegally by his business associates Antonin Scalia and Clarence
Thomas on the Supreme Court.
I would like to point out, however, that his description of the
Vietnam War was somewhat inaccurate. Mr. Gaines implied that the
war was a civil war between the North and the South. Actually, of
course, the North Vietnamese government was largely the force that
defended their country from Japan during World War II, and in fact
utilized many of the ideals that inspired the U.S. during the
Revolutionary War with Britain. Further, the South Vietnamese
government was led by a series of U.S. puppets, most of whom came
and went with great rapidity.
Thank-you for this opportunity to clarify one of the points in
Mr. Gaines’ otherwise excellent commentary. Farrell Winter, Santa
Rosa
