Goodbye to trees
Editor: I would like to acknowledge those of you who have petitioned the Windsor Town Council to save the hundred-plus year old oak trees along Old Redwood Highway adjacent to the new Oliver’s Grocery Store site. The trees scheduled for removal are marked by red ribbon. Many are trees of significance, that is, they are very large, over one hundred years old and usually protected through the Town’s tree ordinance. The road improvements to accommodate the commercial center and apartment/townhouse project known as Bell Village were approved well over a year ago, maybe two. Bell Village is the site of the old Windsorland RV Park, just north of the Chevron Gas Station.
I was opposed to the taking of any of the large oaks for on-street parking and entry to private businesses where there were alternatives. Council approved the design of oak removal on a 4-1 vote. I remain opposed to the removal of many of the oaks as there are alternatives such as eliminating some of the on-street parking spaces and one private business entrance.
It is possible by the time you read this letter, the permit for removal of the old oaks will have been issued. At last Wednesday night’s council meeting, Council indicated they had no interest in hearing from the petitioners to save the old oaks as the decision had already been made. Perhaps you might stop by, have a final look, touch them and say goodbye to these trees that represent the living history of our town. I am a tree hugger; I can’t help myself.

Editor: Last Saturday the Windsor Historical Society hosted its 5th Annual Polenta Dinner Fundraiser. The Historical Society members work thousands of hours each year at the museum making sure that the history of Windsor is preserved and shared with our community. This effort is rewarded with the outpouring of support that our fund-raising event receives. The event was a complete success, with every seat sold out in advance. The Windsor community and even the greater California community contributed so generously to our raffle and silent auction to make an exciting and successful evening.
We would not have been able to pull off such a huge event without the essential help of the student volunteers from the Windsor High School AVID program.
Hats off to the generous Windsor business community, our wonderful members and supporters and all of you.
Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute to our rich local Windsor history.

Thanking Vivint
Editor: I would like to thank Vivint.Solar for giving the Windsor Middle School $15,000 so we could go to science camp this past week. My favorite part of science camp was all of it. It was awesome. I’m also grateful for the backpack, water bottle and t-shirts that Vivint supplied the 6th graders. I’m really glad we have Vivint.Solar at our house and I hope more people get it. Science Camp taught me to be more environmentally conscience and that is why we got solar. Thank you again Vivint.Solar for helping us to get to Science Camp.
