Movathon
Editor: Windsor’s Cali Calmecac Language Academy, is counting down the days for the school’s biggest event of the year, happening Saturday, Sept. 28.  Cali’s 6th annual Move-A-Thon will kick-off at 2 p.m., for an afternoon full of fun and exercise with a “safari” theme put on by Cali PTA and 125 volunteers.
Last year’s Move-a-Thon brought in almost $20,000 thanks to Cali students who raised money by getting pledges for the amount of time they spent exercising, and by sponsorships from local businesses. This year it is particularly important that the event meets its goal of raising $50,000.  In part, this will achieve the requirements of a $25,000 grant conditionally awarded to CCLA by the John Jordon Foundation if the PTA can raise a matching $25,000. The Jordan grant will provide the school with a $50,000 for much needed computers and technology in the classroom.  PTA also needs to raise an additional $25,000 to maintain the continued level of support provided to CCLA for field trips, library books, classroom books, PE equipment, science materials, assemblies and to fill some of the gaps that the damaging school budget crisis has created.
The idea of healthy living will continue to be promoted throughout the afternoon’s event, with healthy food tastings by “Promotores de Salude” or “Promoters of Health,” and Whole Foods. Families will visit booths providing information for Rethink your Drink or Rethink your Snack as well as making hand cranked smoothies. Another example of health awareness is pediatric dental surgery center, PDI of Windsor, who will be promoting oral health education and St Joseph Mobile Health is providing a limited number of TB tests.
Cali students are anticipating the day’s events which will include a guest appearance by Master Instructor Gerardo Sanchez, of Cali kicks Martial Arts. Gerardo’s U-Jam musical work-out is considered a highlight of the event. Gerardo’s contagious enthusiasm for fitness and high-energy beats motivate kids and parents alike. Cali is grateful for Gerardo’s continuous support! Kids will also be trying out basketball, yoga, volleyball, hula hoop jump rope and more. For participating, Cali students will receive a free Move-A-Thon T-shirt that can be worn as part of the Cali uniform.  An art contest was held last spring with students and staff voting on the winning designs created by students. Last year, more than 600 students attended .

Casting Call
Editor: I wanted to let everyone know about what’s going on with the Raven Theater’s plan to bring community theatre to Windsor.  The goal is to raise enough money to lease and renovate the cinderblock church on Windsor River Road and turn it into a small flexible stage theater with about 100 seats for plays, concerts, classes, recitals and more community based performance events.
As part of our fundraising efforts, we are launching a Kickstarter campaign in October and we will be shooting a video to support that campaign. Here’s the fun part: You can be in it! We will be shooting next Friday Sept. 27, all over town. If you want to help bring community theater to Windsor and you’re not afraid to dance around a little, smile a lot and pretend to sing, please join us.
Meet us Friday, Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m. on the Town Green, near the library. Just look for a bunch of people that look like they’re shooting a video. And bring cool stuff to wear – tutus, tights, capes, crowns, whatever. We’ll make it fun and relatively painless! Any questions? Please email me: [email protected]
