Editor: As a former member and officer of a small non-profit
little theatre group some 40 years ago, I was appalled to read that
the Raven Theater owners are asking the City Council for $50,000
just for drawings, architectural models and seed money for a
fund-raising drive to improve and expand their theater.
We too, organized a non-profit. We bought an old building. We
knew exactly what we were getting. It never occurred to us to have
our hand out. No one was paid and any major expense was voted on by
our members and paid from our treasury … which money came from our
performances.
If the city council has the power to hand over $50,000, I would
welcome an approval to fix Healdsburg Avenue from Dry Creek Road to
Sunnyvale Drive … the two blocks which has been neglected for far
too long. The repairs of the potholes are a joke. Those two blocks
are a disaster.
There is no question that long time residents have favorable
memories of their theater. But, that’s what they are … memories and
no amount of remodeling will change that.
In this time of tight money or no money in some instances, it is
the duty of our city fathers who have their hands on the purse
strings, to spend wisely and get their priorities straight.
