Editor: Healdsburg High School students will have a rare and
unique opportunity to partake of and benefit from a community
effort to establish a new academy focusing on construction
technology and sustainability.
This elective will be called CASA, which stands for Construction
And Sustainability Academy. This course of study is the
accumulation of efforts by industry, school officials, and
concerned citizens determined to make a difference in young
people’s lives by offering them lifetime skills that will allow
them to become part of building our community and earning
income.
The Healdsburg High School shop facility will be remodeled by
community and industry volunteers donating labor, materials and
tools to construct a facility to afford young men and women the
chance to learn to do plumbing, electrical, cement, stone work,
construction, casework, flooring, drywall, painting and more.
In their second year of study, they will be able to work
alongside seasoned construction people to put their new skills into
practice.
If they successfully complete the course, they will be prepared
to compete successfully for jobs and earn a good living in their
chosen fields. As in any career, the more knowledge and experience
one acquires the more opportunity there will be for higher
earnings.
The educational opportunities are many and will incorporate the
best green building practices. Anyone interested in environmental
sustainability and green technology will benefit from this
academy.
We urge parents to talk to their children about this program
that will be offered in the fall of 2010. Please help young people
to make wise choices about their future in the job market.
