Why pander?
EDITOR: Why would you start an article with “love em or loathe them?” (Summer means more bikes on local roads, June 8, 2017) You are pandering to those who hate cyclists instead of being part of a solution that is equitable for everyone. The rest of your article speaks to what people on both sides need to be aware of, but quite frankly there should not be sides. Just be safe as a driver and be safe as a cyclist.
I obey all the laws of the road and when I am doing both I hope all others would do the same. Thanks for bringing awareness to the community though. On a side note, last weekend was the senior games in Cloverdale (a good article would have included this) so there was many more cyclists in the area than the norm.

Food pantry provides
EDITOR: The Cloverdale Food Pantry provides food every week to those who potentially would do without. The need is such that tons of food pass through those doors every year. Did you know that the Cloverdale Food Pantry provides 60 pounds each of rice, beans and pasta each and every week? That’s 180 pounds a week and over 9,000 pounds a year. That’s just the start. For nutritious meals, the food pantry has other food items like canned products, tuna, or fresh produce. Last year’s Christmas in June event raised about 1,300 pounds of rice and beans alone. That is just 14 percent of the annual need.
The food pantry acquired over 11,000 pounds of fresh produce from the Redwood Empire Food Bank last year? Additional fresh food was generously provided by the numerous local farmers and gardeners who gleaned their extra fruits and vegetables for the food pantry patrons to enjoy. The pantry also purchased almost 23,000 pounds of other food items from the Redwood Empire Food Bank.
How is our local food pantry able to accomplish this and more? It is through the generosity of Cloverdale citizens helping those in need have food on their tables. To help with the war on hunger, the Cloverdale Food Pantry provides food on average to 65 families per week every week. This equates to about 250 adults and children weekly. The food pantry is run by Cloverdalians for Cloverdalians and is not funded by any government agency.
How can you help? On Wednesday, June 21 at Veterans Memorial Hall from 5 to 7 pm, we will once again celebrate Christmas in June where we will come together and help collect food items to stock the Cloverdale Food Pantry for the summer. This is a time when the cupboards are bare. Food items needed are canned tomatoes, low sugar cereal, tuna, soup, dried beans, rice and pasta.
Don’t forget the giant cookie exchange. Bring two dozen cookies to share with the food pantry and two dozen more to eat that night and take home. Refreshments will be served along with a specialty wine tasting for the adults. Bring the kids to help bag the rice and beans for distribution at the food pantry.
Unable to attend? Drop your items off at Exchange Bank, the Lodge at Clover Springs, Cloverdale Public Library or Redwood Credit Union. For more information contact the Cloverdale Food Pantry at 707-396-8383. Financial donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 1038, Cloverdale, CA 95425.

Support sought for fireworks
EDITOR: Dear Cloverdale Citizens, Businesses and Clubs: The Cloverdale Lions Club is once again sponsoring Cloverdale’s 42nd annual Fourth of July public fireworks display on the evening of Tuesday, July 4 at the Cloverdale High School Football Field (Allen Memorial Field). We hope that this will provide the focus for a community Fourth of July celebration comparable to last year’s program.
As you might suppose, the cost of providing fireworks has increased beyond the means of any one club or organization. We are, therefore, soliciting financial support from all clubs, organizations, businesses and individual citizens.
If you wish to contribute, please send your contributions to the Cloverdale Lions’ Club, PO Box 763, Cloverdale, CA 95425. Donations will also be accepted by Lion Chuck Sibert at 1302 South Cloverdale Boulevard, Lion Tex Dickens at 132 Furber Lane or any Lions Club member.
