The Windsor High School volleyball team is off to its best North Bay League start in school history this week after posting huge wins over Maria Carrillo and Ukiah.
The Jaguars (5-0, 2-0) entered the NBL campaign unbeaten in pre-league play at 3-0, and showed their record was no fluke in a Sept. 13 visit to defending champion Maria Carrillo.
In fact, no Windsor volleyball team had ever beaten the Pumas coming into the match, and the Jaguars proved to all in attendance that they’re a serious contender for the 2016 league title.
The Sept. 13 victory over visiting Carrillo did not come easily, but a relentless net attack and leadership of senior outside hitter Allison Post (29 kills, 14 digs, 3 aces) and the steady play of senior setter Bridget Aikawa (39 assists, 5 digs, 2 aces) was just enough to pull out a dramatic win in five sets; 21-25, 25-20, 18-25, 27-25 and 15-11.
Other huge contributors for the Jags included the great defense of libero Kylie Benjamin (23 digs, 2 aces) and net presence of Brittany Johnson (3 kills, 6 blocks).
Windsor traveled north to Ukiah two nights later, having a much easier time of it to notch a win in straight sets; 25-18, 25-12, 25-19 (no stats available).
At press time the Jaguars were prepping for a Sept. 20 home match with Santa Rosa, followed by a Thursday, Sept. 22 visit to Montgomery. Start times beginning with the frosh are 4/5/6:30 p.m.
