Berkeley’s venerable Edward’s Stadium was the venue for the prestigious North Coast Section Meet of Champions on May 27-28, the final qualifier for athletes with CIF State Track and Field aspirations.
The two-day event consisted of preliminary races contested on Friday and the finals on Saturday. The top three finishers in each event advance to compete at the CIF State Track and Field Championships on June 3-4 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
“We were in fast company,” WHS head coach Doug Hastings said. “We faced the best track and field kids on the Northern West Coast.”
Representing the Running Jaguars at the MOC were senior Giselle Saleby (100 meters) and junior Maddie Call (100 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles). William McTaggart was also a qualifier in the shot put event but did not compete.
Call turned in a great showing, negotiating the 300 intermediate hurdles in a sizzling 47.81 to finish 18th overall, while running the 100 high hurdles in 16.61 to finish 22nd.
Saleby also saved her best for the final meet of the season, running the 100-meter dash in a personal record of 12.76 to finish 10th overall.
