Windsor seeded 11th in CIF Nor Cal State tourney this week
A memorable season will continue this week for the WHS varsity volleyball squad, as it prepares for an historic trip to the CIF Nor Cal Division 2 State Championship Tournament this week.
It is the second straight year that Windsor has landed a spot in the Nor Cal State playoffs.
At press time the number 11 Jaguars were preparing to visit sixth-seeded St. Francis of Sacramento in an opening round clash on Nov. 16, with the reward for the winner a trip to face the survivor of #3 Whitney vs. #14 American on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the site of the highest remaining seed. Check the CIF website at www.cifstate.org for updated bracket information as it becomes available.
The Jaguars (17-6) gained the Nor Cal bid by virtue of a top-four finish in the North Coast Section Division-2 tournament earlier this month, advancing to the semifinals with wins over El Cerrito and Montgomery. Fifth seeded Windsor met its match at top seeded Campolindo on Nov. 9, falling to the Cougars in straight sets; 25-12, 25-14 and 25-17.
Campolindo went on to defeat number two ranked Bishop O’Dowd in the finals on Saturday.
Jags bounced by Cougars
Windsor’s NCS semifinal clash at Campolindo proved to be a tall order, facing a team that featured three players committed to Division 1 colleges, with a front line of players averaging over six feet tall.
“They showed why they were the top seed right away, jumping out to an 8-1 lead in game one,” coach Rich Schwarz said. “Although we started out a little intimidated we did settle down and battle for each point in the next two games. They were just too strong in all facets of game, winning the last two sets.”
Statistical leaders for the Jaguars were Kylie Benjamin (18 digs), Bridget Aikawa (16 assists) and Allison Post (7 kills).
”They were by far the most talented team we’ve played all season,” noted Schwarz.
