Giddings stars in 2016/17 debut
The Lady Jaguars had an impressive basketball season debut in the annual Foundation Game at Justin Siena on Nov. 23, easily defeating the host Braves, 67-51.
“We did it exactly the way we wanted to, scoring double digits in points in each quarter, executing a half-court pressure defense, getting balanced scoring from our post players on the inside and knocking down some treys,” Windsor coach Jeff Paul reported.
The Jags led from start to finish, cruising to 30-15 cushion at the break before holding off a late Braves’ rally en route to a comfortable 16-point win.
Junior Gabby Giddings was nearly unstoppable in the post, pouring in a team-high 23 points.  Other scoring leaders included junior guard Hannah May (19 points, 5 three-pointers) and junior forward Maddie Murphy (12 points).
Since the Foundation Game doesn’t count toward a team’s record, Windsor played its first official contest on Saturday at St. Ignatius in San Francisco, falling to the Wildcats 59-39.
Things didn’t start well for the Jags, struggling offensively in the opening half to trail 26-16. Down 38-28 after three, Windsor mounted a comeback midway through the final period before falling 59-39.
“Despite our poor shooting percentage the defense was good enough to keep us close, trailing by eight points with five minutes remaining in the game,” Paul said.   “We had two opportunities to cut the lead to two or three points but each shot was off and the Wildcats ran away late with a 20-point win.”
May paced the attack with 14 points, while Giddings chipped in eight for the Jags.
Alumni Night
The ladies turned in a great performance in the 5th annual Alumni Night on Nov. 23, easily besting the former Windsor stars, 67-53.
The alumni team was led by Cara Watts, Emily Watts, Ashton Beth, Devon Brook, Angela Delsuc, Kasey James and Angeles Higareda.
“The Lady Jags came out on fire, scoring 28 points in the first quarter and would never look back,” Paul noted.
May led the way for the winning team with 25 points, followed by Giddings (14 points) and Sabrina Simili (12 points).
Scheduling notes
The Lady Jags (0-1) will resume pre-league action on Nov. 29 (after press time) at Healdsburg, followed by participation in the Lady Cat Classic Tournament at Marin Catholic on Dec. 1-3.
