Annual event to include 40 teams, top flight competition
Some 40-plus teams are expected to descend on the Windsor High School gymnasium this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21 as the Jaguars host the 18th annual King of the Mat Wrestling Tournament.
The action kicks off on Friday with the Prince of the Mat JV tourney, while the KOM varsity competition begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. The meet will run all day, with the championship rounds taking place in the late afternoon.
The Jaguars are coming off a busy week of competition, starting with a pair of league dual meet wins over Montgomery (76-0) and Casa Grande (56-18) to extend their league-leading record to 3-0.
On Saturday, Windsor sent a contingent of varsity veterans to the prestigious Tim Brown Memorial tournament, another litmus test that included many of the top wrestlers in California. The Jaguars placed an impressive ninth overall out of 84 participating teams.
Junior returning state qualifier Perez D. Perez led the way for the Jags, capturing first place in the 154-pound weight class. Other top finishers were senior 147-pounder Luke Au Yeung (5th place) and 197-pound senior Aiden Henry (6th place).
“Perez entered the tournament as the top seed at 154 pounds and lived up to expectations,” WHS coach Rich Carnation said. “Luke exceeded expectations by placing fifth, as did fellow senior Aiden Henry, who entered the tournament unseeded and placed sixth after beating the top seeded Folsom wrestler.”
Also competing on Saturday were a group of Windsor sophomores wrestling in the varsity competition at the Clearlake Tournament, placing fifth as a team.
Individual placers included Brandon Fong (4th), Nick Landeros (3rd) and Austin Jacobs (3rd). Josh Wagner and Justin Calvi just missed out on medals and did not place.
Girls garner medals
The WHS girls wrestling team was equally impressive on the mat last week, scoring wins over Montgomery and Casa Grande to maintain the top spot in league. On Saturday, Jan. 14, the ladies captured a first-ever team championship trophy at the Kroppman Memorial Tournament at Clear Lake High School.
Garnering tournament medals for the Lady Jaguars were first place finishers Molly Cox, Yulisa Medrano and Danny Garcia. Capturing second place medals were Ivory Osborn, Azucena Montesinos and Andrea Rocha. Other medalists included Citlalli Santiago (4th place), Whitney Lucchesi (6th place) and Gisele Silva (6th place).
