Windsor will host Casa Grande on Jan. 24
The Lady Jaguars are coming off a tough week on the North Bay League basketball circuit, dropping back-to-back outings against Cardinal Newman (56-17) and Ukiah 57-44).
The setbacks came on the heels of a 47-40 non-league victory over Dougherty Valley in the MLK Classic Tournament, pushing Windsor’s NBL record to 2-5 and 8-10 on the year.
The ladies will start the second half of the league schedule on Jan. 24 against visiting Casa Grande, followed by a Thursday, Jan. 26 trip to Santa Rosa. Tip-off times for the JV and varsity are 6 and 7:30 p.m.
Jags take one of three
Windsor kicked off a busy week of hoops on Jan. 16 in the MLK tourney at Marin Catholic, squaring off with Dougherty Valley. The Jags erased a 16-7 first-quarter deficit to trail 26-20 at the half. Down 38-31 after three, Windsor closed out the contest on a 16-2 run to notch a 47-40 win.
Junior guard Hannah May paced the attack with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while point guard Sabrina Simili (9 points) and center Gabby Giddings (8 points, 9 rebounds) also played well for the Jags.
The Lady Jaguars ran into a buzz-saw in the Jan. 18 clash with defending NBL and state champion Cardinal Newman, with the Cardinals dominating in every phase in racing to a 34-9 halftime lead. Things didn’t improve much after intermission, as the visitors held the Jags to just eight points in the final two periods en route to a 56-17 rout.
“We were overmatched by the Cardinals’ size and speed and did all we could to score 17 points,” Jags coach Jeff Paul said. “We were unable to get any consistent scoring, or a single player in double-digits in scoring.”
Simili led the way with six points, while other scorers included Giddings (4 points, 10 rebounds), Alyssa Woods (3 points), Caitlyn Murphy (2 points) and May (2 points).
Windsor paid Ukiah a visit on Jan. 20, suiting up only seven players due to illness. Despite the lack of depth, a three-pointer by Tori Russotti and put back by Giddings had the Jaguars up 5-0 early. Trailing 8-2, the Wildcats got it rolling late in the period to grab a 14-11 lead. Ukiah led 27-16 at the half.
Russotti knocked down a pair of treys to start a strong third-quarter surge that would draw Windsor within eight at 40-32 entering the fourth. It was as close as the Jags would get the rest of the way as the Wildcats cruised to a 57-44 win.
Pacing the attack were May (12 points, 4 treys), Simili (10 points) and Russotti (9 points, 3 for 4 from 3-point line).
