Berkeley’s historic Edward’s Stadium was the site for the prestigious North Coast Section Meet of Champions on May 26-27, the final qualifier for athletes with CIF State Track and Field aspirations.
The two-day event included preliminary races on Friday and the finals on Saturday. The top three finishers in each event advance to compete at the CIF State Track & Field Championships on June 2-3 in Clovis.
Representing Windsor’s eight-person contingent at the MOC were thrower Ruben Mehler, hurdler Maddie Call, long jumper Casey McLaughlin and 1,600-meter specialist Lucas Chung. In addition, the girls 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay teams consisting of freshmen Jayda Pignataro, Lauren McCabe, Kendall Campos and Amber Balogh competed at the MOC.
Mehler, who captured league and NCS REQ titles in both throwing events this year, captured sixth place overall in the discus event with a toss of 152’ 3” and placed 15th in the shot put with a heave of 42’ 1”.
Chung gained entry to the MOC by way of some late scratches from the NCS meet and made the most of it, running a personal best in the 1,600-meter prelims in a fast 4:29.
Call, the top female hurdler in WHS history, overcame a sprained neck to place 10th overall in the 100-meter high hurdles in a season best time. She will attend Chico State University in the fall and compete as a pentathlete.
The WHS girls relay teams also logged outstanding efforts at the MOC, including a season best time of 50.82 in Friday’s 4 x 100 relay prelim.
Future bright for Running Jags
Although the Jaguars will lose some senior standouts to graduation in June, the future looks bright for both girls and boys teams.
“We have some big holes to fill next season on the boys team, but maybe the champion boys JV team will fill some of them,” WHS coach Doug Hastings said. “The freshmen girls have a lot of promise and hopefully we can add some field events to that crew.”
