Chung shatters WHS record on two-mile Viking Opener course
The Running Jags hit the trails in a pair of recent meets held at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa, logging some outstanding performances.
The Jaguars began the week on the classic 3.05-mile Spring Lake course in the Super Septo meet on Sept. 13, toeing the starting line against both North Bay and Sonoma County League competition.
Junior Lucas Chung continued a remarkable start to the season in the Super Septo meet with a clocking of 15:43, just missing the school record.
On Saturday the Jags were back on the abbreviated two-mile Spring Lake course in the 33rd annual Viking Opener, a meet consisting of some 30 teams in several divisions, including senior boys, junior boys, junior/senior girls, frosh/soph boys and girls, and open runners.
Chung wasn’t denied this time, shattering the WHS record in the Junior Division race on the two-mile course in a winning time of 10:09. It was the fastest time of the day and the third consecutive year that Chung has won his division in the Viking Opener.
Other standout efforts at the Viking Opener included Hunter Larson (6th place in sophomore race, 10:58), Michael Freitas (11:47) and John Cionci (11:50).Â
Erin O’Mara paced the girls in the Frosh/Soph race (11th place, 13:24), followed by teammates Jayda Pignataro (19th place, 14:08) and Nataleigh Johnson (21st, 14:11).
