Jags weather tough schedule; host Hayward this Friday
There’s something admirable about an underdog that gets knocked to the turf, only to get up, dust themselves off and move on to the next challenge.
The Jaguars did all that and more in their home opener on Friday against perennial state juggernaut Del Oro, going toe to toe for four quarters before succumbing to the Golden Eagles, 46-13.
It was the second straight loss to a state caliber opponent for Windsor, in what has been the toughest preseason schedule in the program’s history.
“The score may not say it but our kids competed,” Windsor head coach Kevin Ballatore said. “We may not see speed like that again this season and I thought our kids played hard and handled it really well.”
The Jaguars (0-2) figure to benefit from the experience gained in their first two games in week three as they play host to visiting Hayward this Friday, Sept. 15 in a 7:30 p.m. varsity kickoff.
The Farmers (0-2) are coming off a 15-12 loss to Pinole Valley on Friday.
“Our goal is to just stay hungry and get better each game,” Ballatore said. “As a coaching staff we still don’t know what we have yet, but we should start to find out this week.”
Jags battle Golden Eagles
Del Oro came out fast in Friday’s clash in Windsor, using exceptional size and speed to control the line of scrimmage. The Golden Eagles capitalized on good early field position to put 17 unanswered points on the board in the opening period, adding 22 more in the second for a commanding 39-0 cushion at the half.
The Jags refused to pack it in, putting 13 points on the board with a pair of touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Nick Pariani to senior slot receiver Jorgen Sarganis in the second half en route to a 46-13 Del Oro win.
“Our goal at halftime was to win the second half and we did that,” Ballatore said.
