The opening weekend of the 2017-2018 North Bay Catholic Youth Organization basketball season saw many tight games for the 25 Our Lady of Guadalupe teams. The OLG CYO game of the week was a thrilling eighth grade boys 43-40 victory over St. Mary of Ukiah.
The local team fell behind 26-17 at the half. The margin increased to ten after three quarters but the final frame was all OLG. The Ukiah team led 40-38 with less than two minutes in the game. Joe Soltanizadeh nailed two free throws to tie the game. Danny Nevarez’s lay up put the Windsor squad up with 20 seconds on the clock. Jackson Earl’s free throw sealed the win.
Soltanizadeh led OLG scorers with 10 points. Nevarez and Earl added eight each. Joey Skinner finished with seven to close out the top OLG scorers.
Coach Dave Earl’s crew returns to the hardwood next week with a 4:30 p.m. game on Sunday against St. Vincent at Windsor Middle School. The public is invited to attend all OLG home games at WMS.
