King of the mat – Windsor heavyweight Austin Jacob controlled his opponent on his way to a fifth place medal at the King of the Mat tournament on Jan. 20.

The Windsor High School wrestling team continued its quest to regain North Bay League supremacy on Jan. 24, scoring a dominant 57-24 dual meet victory over visiting league contender Cardinal Newman.
“Freshman Gil Brantley won the key match of the night in the 154-pound weight class, coming back from being down 8-2 to score a pin,” veteran coach Rich Carnation reported. “It was the first varsity match of the night and set the tone for the rest of the meet.”
The win pushed Windsor’s league record to 5-0 while Newman fell to 4-1. The victory gives the Jaguars momentum heading into a titanic visit to defending champion Ukiah on Wednesday, Jan. 31 (6 p.m.).
On Saturday, the Jaguars sent a three-man contingent to the Mid-Cal Tournament in Gilroy, as 108-pound junior dynamo Blake Fredrickson led the way in going 5-0 to capture first place. Also wrestling well at the tourney were 147-pound Trent Silva (5-2, seventh place) and 122-pounder Justin Campbell (3-2).
“Blake had a great tournament,” Carnation noted. “He pinned the #6 ranked wrestler in the state in the semifinals and then beat the #4 ranked state wrestler in the finals. We expect Blake’s ranking in the state to continue to climb.”
