Windsor improves to 3-2; Brett Callan tourney up next
The varsity basketball Jaguars overcame a slow start with a great second half in a preseason clash with Healdsburg on Dec. 5, turning back a stubborn visiting Greyhounds squad in a hard-fought 51-44 win.
The victory lifted the Jaguars over the .500 mark with a 3-2 record.
At press time Windsor was preparing to resume pre-league action against visiting San Marin on Dec. 12, followed by participation in the annual Brett Callan Tournament hosted by Casa Grande on Dec. 14-16. The Jags will open the Callan tourney on Thursday, Dec. 14 in a 3:30 p.m. tilt against Napa.
Windsor had its collective hands full in the Dec. 5 meeting with Healdsburg, playing the Greyhounds on nearly even terms to take an 18-16 edge at the end of one. The Hounds continued to light it up from the perimeter in the second quarter, knocking down a flurry of three-pointers as Healdsburg took a 34-26 lead at the half.
“We had a poor defensive first half,” Jags coach Travis Taylor said. “The focus in the second half was much better defensively.”
Windsor’s increased intensity paid immediate dividends, limiting the hot shooting Hounds to just four points in the decisive third quarter to cut the deficit to 38-33 heading into the final period. The Jaguars put the hammer down in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Greyhounds 18-6 in the last eight minutes to notch a 51-44 win.
Riley Smith led the Windsor attack with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. Other top contributors included Justin Smith (13 points, 6 rebounds), Travis Carlozzi (7 points, 4 boards, 3 assists), Jordan Merical (5 points, 3 steals) and Jaden Ruybalid (2 points, 3 steals).
