A strong second half propelled Our Lady of Guadalupe’s sixth grade girls team into the playoffs in this week’s North Bay Catholic Youth Organization play. Coach Dave Avila’s team beat St. Sebastian of Sebastopol 27-26 to improve their record to 5-4 and secure the division’s final playoff spot.
The locals fell behind 12-9 at the half but pulled to within one point after three quarters. The final frame saw OLG grab the lead then hold on with clutch free throw shooting.
Mia Avila led all OLG scorers with nine points. She was followed with Taylor Boyce’s seven points. Other OLG scorers were Christell McCormick (4 points), A’Anna Ortiz-Gaitan (3 points), Tianna Towery (3 points) and Sophia Soltanizadeh (1 point.)
There is one week left in the NBCYO season. OLG will host playoff games on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Windsor Middle School. The public is invited to attend. For more information, email
