Windsor soccer teams will wrap the winter campaign this week with a pair of matches, hopeful that a strong finish will ease the pain of a challenging North Bay League season.
The Lady Jaguars (7-9-2, 4-8) played great soccer last week in gaining a split against Santa Rosa (2-1 win) and Montgomery (3-1 loss), and will close out the NBL schedule with home matches against Maria Carrillo (Feb. 6), after press time) and Ukiah on Friday, Feb. 9 (Senior Night, 7 p.m.).
Meanwhile the varsity boys (5-10-2), 3-8-1) fell in both of their recent matches, dropping games to Santa Rosa (1-0) and Montgomery (4-1). The Jaguars will finish up league play this week with home and away matches against Maria Carrillo (Feb. 7, 7 p.m.) and Ukiah (7 p.m.).
Ladies notch win
The girls spotted Santa Rosa an early goal to trail 1-0 at the half on Jan. 31, but more than made up for the slow start after intermission. Senior veteran Madi Baer got her team on the board in the second half (assist from Carmi Dotario) to forge a 1-1 tie and got the game winner moments later when Alyna Gonzales found the net for a 2-1 lead. The Windsor defense made the lead stick en route to a 2-1 victory.
The girls may have played one of their best halves of the season in a losing cause on Friday at Montgomery. The Jags trailed 3-1 at the break, with Windsor’s point coming on a goal from freshman Isabella Chavez. The Windsor defense dug in after the break, not allowing another score as the Vikings hung on for a 3-1 win.
“We got our offense going as well and had some great shots in the second half, but could not convert any of them into goals,” coach Mark Archambault said. “The coaching staff was extremely proud of the way the players stepped up their play against a team that scored six goals on them earlier in the season.”
Boys fall to league foes
Windsor ran up against a pair of league powers in Santa Rosa and Montgomery, with the former posting a 1-0 shutout over the Jaguars on Jan. 31.
On Friday, the Jags got a goal from veteran Reymundo Duenas but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings powered to a 4-1 win.
“The big news from that game was the second half red card issued to senior defender Paul Bossard for aggressive play,” assistant coach John Richards reported. “It was a tough game up to that point, with a lot of physicality. Tempers flared and Paul eventually found himself on the wrong end of a double yellow.”
