The Lady Jaguars are coming off a humbling stretch on the North Bay League softball campaign, dropping all four games played in a busy week of action.
Windsor (4-7, 1-4) began the string on April 10 with a 10-0 loss at Cardinal Newman, and fell in subsequent home outings to Rancho Cotate (11-2) and Montgomery (11-8, 8 innings). The Jags wrapped up the stretch on Saturday with a tough, 8-7 non-league loss at American Canyon in nine innings.
“Even though we took four losses this week, we improved and had great moments that we haven’t had lately,” head coach Morgan Rasmason reported. “I’m proud of them for keeping with the process and continuing to work for it.”
The ladies will be looking to bounce back this week beginning on April 17 (after press time) at Casa Grande, followed by a Thursday, April 19 visit to Rancho Cotate. Windsor will host Ukiah next Tuesday, April 24. All games start at 4 p.m.
Jags battle league opponents
The Jags’ April 10 visit to Cardinal Newman didn’t go as planned, as the Cardinals cranked up their offense with three runs in the third and fourth innings to gain separation, tacking on four more en route to a 10-0 win.
Kayla Scott (4 IP, 8 hits, 5 ERs, 3 Ks) took the loss, while Kasandra Jaramillo (2 IP, 6 hits, 3) closed it out. Hitting safely were Anis Acevedo (1 for 2), Alyssa De Casas (1 for 3) and Mele Pearl (1 for 2).
Windsor played host to league-leading Rancho Cotate the following day, yielding seven runs in the first two frames. The Jags plated solo runs in the third and fifth innings but could get no closer in an eventual 11-2 loss. Scott (5.1 IP, 13 hits, 11 runs, 4 Ks) went the distance, while top hitters included Scott (2 for 3), Camille Kahnberg (1 for 3), Acevedo (1 for 2) and De Casas (1 for 3, run).
The Lady Jaguars were out for redemption in their third straight outing on April 11 against visiting Montgomery. Windsor erupted with five runs in the opening frame for an early 5-1 lead, but the Vikings would chip away at the deficit, eventually sending it into extra innings knotted at 8-8. The visitors ended the battle with three runs in the eighth to pull out an 11-8 victory.
“I was happy with the Montgomery game,” Rasmason said. “Before the game I told our players to just go out and play like when they were little kids with nothing to worry about.”
Scott took the loss, but was red hot at the plate (4 for 4, 2B, 2 runs). Other hitting leaders were Caitlyn Murphy (2 for 5, RBI), De Casas (2 for 5) and Jaramillo (2 for 5, RBI).
The ladies wrapped up a busy stretch on April 14 at American Canyon, missing several key players who were taking the ACT test. Freshman JV call-up Savanna Cordova got the pitching start, doing an admirable job in keeping her team in the game. Also making their varsity debut were freshman designated player Kelly Tagnolli and sophomore second baseman Mackenzie Coate.
Windsor took a 6-2 lead into the fifth, but American Canyon clawed back to send it into extra frames tied at 7-all. The Wolves plated the winning run in the eighth to escape with an 8-7 win.
“I was very happy with Saturday’s game, we did a lot of great things for the hand we were dealt and everyone experienced every emotion possible,” Rasmason noted. “It was one of those games where it just doesn’t go your way.”
