Rock and fire – Kayla Scott turned in a pair of solid relief outings in varsity softball games at Redwood and San Marin.

Windsor falls to MCAL powers Redwood and San Marin

The Lady Jaguars continued a challenging preseason softball schedule this week, logging games against Marin County powers Redwood and San Marin.
The Jags opened the action in a March 5 road clash at Redwood, sending junior Sydney Hage to the hill opposite the Giant’s Catherine Jensen.
Redwood struck for a pair of first innings runs but it was all Hage (3 IP, 2 hits, 2 ERs, 2 Ks) would allow in a three-inning stint before giving way to reliever Kayla Scott (3 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 3 Ks) in the fourth.
Windsor cut the lead in half with a solo run in the sixth when Hage reached base on a single. With Mele Pearl on to pinch run, a sacrifice bunt from Anis Acevedo and a throwing error moved the runner to third. Redwood was then called for a defensive obstruction at third base, sending the runner home.
It was all the Jaguars could muster the rest of the way, mounting a bases loaded threat in the seventh as the Giants hung on for a 2-1 victory.
“Our defense was our strength in this game,” Jags coach Morgan Rasmason said. “Syd and Kayla both pitched great, not leaving too much on the plate and neither were hit hard, giving our defense a chance to make plays.”
The Jaguars managed just two hits, with Hage (1 for 3) and Kasandra Jaramillo each collecting singles.
Windsor traveled to San Marin on March 8, another perennial playoff team with a winning tradition. This game didn’t go as well, as the Mustangs struck for two in the first and three more in the third to bust it open. The Jaguars were held to just one hit off the bat of Alyssa De Casas as San Marin power to an 8-0 win.
Hage (4 IP, 9 hits, 5 ERs, 2 Ks) took the loss while Scott (2 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 1 K) closed it out in mop-up duty. Turning in outstanding defensive plays were Caitlyn Murphy and Gracie Hernandez.
“We didn’t have at-bats like I wanted,” Rasmason noted. “We had multiple at-bats where we’d watch good strikes go by then chase her rise ball out of the zone. This was the level/caliber of team I was hoping to play against to help prepare us for league but I didn’t expect the result to be an 8-0 loss. I want to complete with teams like this, but we just didn’t show up to play and the other team did.”
At press time the Jaguars (1-2) were preparing to host Sonoma Valley on March 12 and will visit American Canyon on Friday, March 14 in a 4 p.m. start (weather permitting).  Windsor will entertain Terra Linda next Monday, March 19 in a make-up date at 4 p.m.
