New coach takes over for Travis Taylor; hopes to continue winning tradition
The Windsor High School administration has named Jared Greninger as the new head basketball coach, succeeding veteran coach Travis Taylor.
Greninger, who will teach math at the school, comes in with a boatload of coaching experience, a 17-year resume that includes time at Twin Hills Junior High, along with stints at San Rafael, Novato and Montgomery High Schools. Recently, he coached the JV team at Healdsburg High School.
The 34-year-old Greninger expressed both excitement and enthusiasm in joining a highly successful team that has produced two league titles in the past three seasons.
“I’m taking over a great program and am really excited to be a coach on campus,” he said. “My goal is to try to keep the success at a similar level and be one of the top teams in league. We’re losing some really good players (to graduation) but our expectations are still high.”
Greninger has the off-season program running at full steam, holding informal practices five days a week along with participation in the Santa Rosa Junior College summer league on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Although the coaching staff has not yet been finalized at all levels, Greninger has named Michael Bauman as a varsity assistant, joining veteran WHS coaches Gabe Jenkins and Mike Farmer.
“My goal is to keep as many coaches from the previous regime as possible,” Greninger noted.
Like any good coach, Greninger plans to adapt his game strategy to the players he has, but hinted he does expect the Jaguars to run the floor and play an aggressive style of defense.
“I’m more of an up-tempo coach,” he said. “With the guys that we have this year we’re going to fast-break and trap on defense. I see us making a lot of substitutions where we’re not relying on any one or two of our guys.”
The Jaguars have several summer tournaments on the docket, including Marin Catholic and Rocklin. Windsor will host the annual Summer Shootout tourney next weekend on July 14-15.
