Jags making final push for postseason spot this week
Nothing has come easily for the Jaguars in a rough and tumble North Bay League volleyball schedule this season, and that trend continued in a pair of hotly contested matches last week.
Windsor (2-6, 8-7) squared off with visiting Montgomery on Oct. 9, dropping the final three sets to fall in four games; 25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 19-25.
“We did everything we could do to give away game two, making 14 errors,” said Jags’ head coach Rich Schwarz. “Even though we cleaned our errors up the last two games the momentum had changed, and we would let them go on runs of 5-8 points to let them pull ahead and win the games.”
Setter Katie Todd turned in a great night with five aces, 12 service points, 3 kills and 16 assists. Other outstanding efforts were had by outside hitter Elena Dyer (14 kills) and Destiny Clark (season high 10 kills).
The Jaguars entertained visiting Analy two nights later with a similar result, following up a strong 25-20 win in game one by dropping the next three sets to fall; 13-25, 12-25, 20-25.
Complicating matters was the fact that Windsor lost a pair of front-row players to illness and injury during the match, making due with a makeshift line-up.
“Without enough front-row hitters it threw us off track as we had to fill in at positions we weren’t used to playing,” Schwarz noted. “Analy took full advantage of this and, along with playing excellent defense, they dominated games two and three.”
Statistical leaders for Windsor included middle hitter Brittany Johnson (11 kills, 2 blocks), Elena Dyer (11 kills, 4 aces), sophomore setter Hannah Dyer (23 assists), libero Izzy Earl (25 digs) and Faith St. Amant (17 digs).
The Jags will celebrate Senior Night versus Cardinal Newman on Oct. 16 (after press time) and close out the regular season schedule on Oct. 18 at Maria Carrillo. Match times starting with the frosh are 4/5/6:30 p.m.
