The Jaguars continued to hone their skills at the 50th annual San Marin Green & Gold Wrestling Tournament in Novato on Dec. 8, with six of seven participating athletes coming home with top-five medals.
Although the season is still young, the Windsor brain trust came away pleased by their team’s overall performance.
“As a team we brought only about half our numbers to the tournament but the kids that were there all wrestled well,” coach Rich Carnation reported. “We’ve still got a few kids that are coming back from injury, but we should have a full team by mid January.”
Garnering tournament hardware by weight class at the Green & Gold were 106-pound Jon Fredrickson (3-1, 2nd place), 113-pound Isaiah Rubio (3-1, 5th place), 126-pound Brandon Fong (3-1, 2nd place, injury default), 138-pound Brennan Brown (3-1, 3rd place), 195-pound Alex Cruz (3-1, 2nd place) and heavyweight Austin Jacob (4-0, 1st place). In addition, 170-pound Jacob Campos went 2-2 but did not medal.
Girls score wins in San Leandro
Windsor girls were represented by just three wrestlers at the 19th Annual Roger Briones Tournament in San Leandro on Dec. 8, an event that included over 325 high school girls competing in all weight classes. The Lady Jaguars had a great showing, placing ninth out of 43 participating teams with 62.5 points.
Leading the Windsor team was 111-pound freshman champion Carmen Perez who went undefeated, including a 6-1 win over returning state qualifier Teresa Serrano from Rodriguez High School in the finals.
Also turning in an outstanding tournament performance was 116-pound Ivory Osborn, who negotiated her bracket with a perfect 8-0 record before losing in the finals. Osborn was leading her opponent, 9-1 when she got caught in a bad position, which resulted in a loss by fall.
Rounding out the Windsor contingent was 106-pound junior Molly Cox, who placed sixth overall in her weight class.
“I’m proud of the overall wrestling performance, with this being the beginning of the wrestling season,” WHS coach Richard Dixon said. “Ivory and Perez dominated their opponents and set the pace in all of their matches.”
Next up for the Windsor girls is the Liberty Tournament in Brentwood on Saturday, Dec. 22.
