The varsity basketball Jaguars saw their NBL losing streak reach five games last week, dropping a pair of road battles at Montgomery and Analy.
At press time the Jags (1-6, 10-14) were entering the final stretch of league play, closing out the league schedule at Cardinal Newman on Wednesday, Jan. 30, before coming home to host Piner this Friday, Feb. 1 (Senior Night). The varsity tips off at 7:30 p.m.
Jags drop a pair
Windsor was hoping to pull an upset in a Jan. 23 at visit to second-place Montgomery, a tough task for any visiting team.
“We came into this game knowing that we would have to battle every possession on offense and defense,” Jags coach Jared Greninger said. “My boys stepped up to that challenge.”
The Jaguars came out focused and ready, answering every surge to trail by just 24-22 at the half. The Vikings began to gain separation in a 12-7 third-quarter run and pulled away in the final minutes en route to a 58-45 win.
Despite the loss, there was a sense of satisfaction in the Windsor locker room.
“We took away some of the things they did the first time we played them, especially their ability to score around the basket,” Greninger noted later. “In the second half, their ability to execute in the half court offensively took its toll on us and wore us down. The final score does not reflect how close this game really was.”
Christian Jernigan (8 points, 7 rebounds) and Jaden Ruybalid (8 points, 3 rebounds) shared top scoring honors while other good efforts were had by Jordan Merical (7 points), Andrew Corcoran (7 points), Billy Boyle (7 points), Jack Amormino (6 points, 5 rebounds) and Luke Kraft (2 points).
The Jaguars came out a bit flat in Friday’s visit to Analy, looking to post their fourth win over the Tigers this season. Analy had other plans for this one, coming out with a steely determination that would lead to an eventual, 56-49 win.
“We lacked the energy and effort this game that made us so successful in our previous match-ups with Analy this year,” Greninger noted. “It’s very difficult to beat a team multiple times in one season and Analy played with the effort that they had something to prove and ultimately out worked us throughout the evening.”
Pacing the Windsor offense were Merical (16 points, 6 boards, 4 assists), Boyle (10 points, 5 rebounds), Ruybalid (10 points, 4 rebounds), Kraft (5 points, 4 boards), Jernigan (4 points, 15 rebounds), Amormino (2 points, 2 rebounds) and Tyler McBratney (2 points).
