Windsor High School wrestling
Hundreds of female wrestlers will converge on the Windsor High School gymnasium this Saturday, Jan. 26 when the Lady Jaguars host the first annual Goddess of the Vine Tournament. The action starts at 9 a.m.
The tourney is the latest event in a meteoric rise in both participation and popularity in girls wrestling, with Windsor taking on a leading role in Sonoma County.
“This tournament will continue a big push for girl’s wrestling in this and surrounding counties,” WHS coach Rich Dixon reported. “At this point of the season, we’re trying to make the right steps to peak in the month of February. By keeping wrestlers healthy and safe, and getting the right mindset for matches.”
Windsor earns medals
The ladies continued to impress on the tournament mat at the Jesse Bethel tourney on Jan. 19, with three Windsor athletes taking home top seven medals in their respective weight class.
Leading the way for the Jags was Dulce Chavez, who navigated the 111-pound bracket unscathed with three wins before settling for second place. Also turning in outstanding efforts were 111-pound Ivory Osborn (2-1, injury default, 6th place) and Samantha Burger (3-2, 4th place).
Boys post dual meet, tourney wins
The defending champion Jaguars flexed their muscles in their latest NBL dual meet at Maria Carrillo on Jan. 16, taking down the Pumas in a 51-21 rout. Scoring mat wins for Windsor were 108-pound Jon Fredrickson (by fall), 115-pound Isaiah Rubio (by fall), 122-pound Blake Fredrickson (by fall), 147-pound Brennan Brown (by fall), 154-pound Justin Campbell (by decision) and 197-pound Alex Cruz (by fall).
On Saturday, the Jaguars turned in a great collective effort at the high level Puma Classic tourney at Maria Carrillo, placing second overall as a team. The meet was a veritable who’s who in high school wrestling, featuring dozens of state ranked athletes.
Top individual performers for Windsor included 122-pound Blake Fredrickson (4-0, 1st place), 106-pound Isiah Rubio (3-1, 2nd place), 138-pound Brennan Brown (3-1, 2nd place), 145-pound Justin Campbell (3-1, 2nd place) and 152-pound Trent Silva (3-1, 2nd place). Also logging wins for the Jags were 125-pound Brandon Fong (1-1), 160-pound Jose Morfin (1-1), 170-pound Jacob Campos (1-1), 182-pound Jared Buchanan (2-1), 195-pound Alex Cruz (1-1) and heavyweight Austin Jacob (1-1).
