Wrestling season kicked into high gear for the defending league champion Windsor High School Jaguars, opening the newly aligned North Bay League Oak Division with a pair of dual meet wins. The Jags (2-0) kicked off the stretch on Jan. 8 in a showdown with Cardinal Newman, soundly defeating the Cardinals, 51-21.
On Thursday, Windsor ventured north to face Healdsburg, controlling the Greyhounds from start to finish in a 64-12 rout.
Collecting individual wins against Healdsburg were 115-pound Isaiah Rubio (by fall), 122-pound Blake Fredrickson (by fall), 134-pound Brandon Fong (by 8-4 decision), 140-pound Brennan Brown (by fall), 147-pound Tony Russotti (by fall), 154-pound Trent Silva (by fall), 162-pound Jose Murfin (by fall), 184-pound Jacob Campos (by forfeit), 197-pound Jared Buchanan (by forfeit) and heavyweight Austin Jacob (by fall).Â
The Jaguars sent a strong contingent to the prestigious Tim Brown Memorial Tournament in Sacramento on Jan. 11-12, as wrestlers Blake Fredrickson, Trent Silva, Jon Fredrickson, Brennan Brown and Austin Jacob all advanced to the second day of competition on Saturday.
Leading the charge was 115-pound senior Blake Fredrickson, who navigated a tough bracket unscathed to capture an individual title. In addition, Fredrickson was named the Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler of the tournament.Â
The 154-pound Silva was nearly as good, advancing to the tournament finals before settling for second place. Also taking home Tim Brown hardware was Brennan Brown, who captured eighth place overall at 138 pounds.
Ladies bring home tourney hardware  Â
The Lady Jaguars were not to be upstaged at the Lady Apache Tournament in Sanger on Jan. 12, as 106-pound Carmen Perez and 111-pound Dulce Chavez came home with hard-earned medals.
Perez drew a first-round bye before recording subsequent wins by fall and injury default to advance to the finals. There she fell to the #1 ranked state wrestler by a first-round fall to settle for second place.
Chavez also had an outstanding tournament, recording four pins against one loss to take home a seventh place medal. Next up for the ladies is the Jesse Bethel Tournament in Vallejo on Jan. 19. Â
