Handful of Windsor athletes vying for state bids
Pride and tradition will be on the line this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 15 and 16) when the Jaguars take the mat at the North Coast Section Wrestling Championships at James Logan High School in Union City.
The goal for most participating athletes will be a top-three finish in their respective weight class, good for advancement to the prestigious CIF State Championships on Feb. 22-23 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Windsor, which has sent a contingent to state for each of the past 15 years, will be among the top teams competing at NCS, with several athletes favored to land a coveted state bid.
The Jags wrapped up a strong North Bay League campaign on Feb. 8 at the league championships hosted by Ukiah, coming up just short in their quest for a team title, finishing a close second to the Wildcats.
The objective for most athletes at the NBL tourney was a top-five overall finish (to qualify for NCS) in a new league format, with sixth place finishers holding an NCS alternate position.  Â
Leading the charge of NCS qualifiers for the Jags were league champions (by weight class); 106-pound Isaiah Rubio, 113-pound Blake Fredrickson, 132-pound Brennan Brown and 145-pound Trent Silva.Â
Taking home second-place medals at the NBL tourney were 126-pound Brandon Fong, 138-pound Justin Campbell, 160-pound Jacob Campos and 195-pound Alex Cruz. Â
Rounding out the list of NCS qualifiers are 220-pound Marco Ramirez (4th place), 170-pound Israel Higareda (5th place), 182-pound Jarred Buchanan (5th place) and 120-pound Juan Bernal (6th place, alternate).Â
