Twenty-four year-old Leona Maguire captured her first professional victory on Sunday in the 54-hole Windsor Golf Classic Tournament, a local stop on the women’s Symetra Tour.
The County-Cavan, Ireland native fired a bogey-free 7-under par 65 in the final round on the Windsor Golf Club course for a 12-under total of 204, edging out Pajaree Anannarukarn (12-under) in the first hole of a sudden death playoff.
Rounding out the top five finishers were Casey Danielson (11-under), Kim Welch (10-under) and Marta Sanz Barrio (10-under).
Maguire’s victory netted her the top prize of $22,500 and highlighted a stormy start to the tournament, with rain forcing an early stoppage of play in the opening round on Friday. Players finished second round play Sunday morning before wrapping up the final round in the afternoon.
“I’ve been so close for the past few weeks and started off really well today and tried to keep my foot down,” Maguire said in a statement. “I suppose being so close last week gave me a little bit of extra motivation and it tastes a little sweeter today.”
It was the second time in three years that the Windsor Golf Club served as a stop on the Symetra Tour, having hosted the inaugural event in 2017.
The top Symetra Tour is the official qualifying tour of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, with the top ten finishers each year moving on to play on the LPGA circuit.
