Windsor is top seed in league tournament this week
The varsity baseball Jaguars are the champions of the inaugural North Bay League Redwood Division, claiming one win in a two-game set with second-place Piner to lock up the title.
The Jags (10-2, 14-6-1) will now turn their attention to the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the league playoff tournament, playing host to No. 4 El Molino on Wednesday, May 8 in the opener (4 p.m.). Should Windsor win, it will advance to play the survivor of the Piner-Santa Rosa game on Friday, May 10.
Also very much in the picture is a berth in the North Coast Section Division 2 playoffs, which start next week. The NCS seeding committee will meet on May 12 to fill out the bracket.
The historic league championship has been a long time coming for a Jag’s program that has been solid through the years, and was a sweet outcome for a talented Windsor squad.
“It was really a good feeling to win the league title,” head coach Dave Avila said. “A lot of people said we were the favorites this season, and we got everybody’s best shot, and handled it with composure and maturity all season long.”
Jags capture title
Windsor entered the final week of the league season needing one win in two scheduled games against Piner, and did just that thanks in large part to a stellar mound performance from senior pitcher Tyler Hellums on May 1. The veteran ace fired five innings of two-hit ball, yielding no earned runs while fanning nine before handing the ball to closer Cameron Hayman (2 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs) in a 10-1 rout.  Swinging hot bats for the Jags were Hayman (2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBIs), Gary Hall (2 for 2, run), Carson Ramocinski (2 for 3, 2B, 3 runs, RBI), Will Matthews (1 for 2, 3 runs, RBI), Joseph Soltanizadeh (1 for 4, RBI) and Cyrus Soltanizadeh (1 for 3, run, RBI).
Windsor came out a bit flat in the rematch at Piner on Friday, spotting the Prospectors an 8-2 lead before eventually falling, 9-5. Hall (4 IP, 5 hits, 4 ERs, 4 Ks) took the loss while Ramocinski, Matthews and Joseph Soltanizadeh each collected a pair of hits for the Jags.
The Jaguars finished up the regular season schedule on Saturday in a non-league clash at Analy, taking an early 8-0 lead by virtue of a couple of Cy Soltanizadeh homers en route to a 12-8 victory. Matt Kemper (4.2 IP, 5 hits, 3 ERs, 6 Ks) notched the win, while leading hitters included Cy Soltanizadeh (3 for 3, 2 HRs, 3 runs, 4 RBIs), Ian McGee (3 for 4, 2B, run, 3 RBIs), Nick Landeros (2 for 4, 2B, run), Ramocinski (1 for 4, 3 runs), Devon Reynolds (1 for 3, run, 2 RBIs), Josh Delatorre (1 for 3, run, RBI) and Hall (1 for 4, run, RBI).
