Winter is a sneaky great time to play golf. There might be frost at Windsor Golf Club in the morning but it will usually thaw by 9 a.m. If you tee off by 10 a.m. you’ll play during the warmest part of the day and be finished with 18 holes by 2:30 p.m. What’s a better way to spend a day in Sonoma County? You’ll see a few hot air balloons, beautiful birds and putt on absolutely manicured greens. Call for a tee time today at 838-7888.

I haven’t been able to play since my leg surgery but I’m proud to say I now have the “family putting title” against my son. The 18-hole match victories go back and forth between the two of us. I think my son likes to put me on hilly holes so I might fall over on my crutches (just kidding little buddy).
Speaking of putting, our extended Calegari family had 20 people gather at San Francisco’s Urban Putt on Saturday night. It’s a cleverly designed 21st century indoor miniature golf course with 14 holes that must have been designed by the most creative minds in the Bay Area. The course looks like a larger than life version of the board game Mousetrap with gears, pulleys, and ramps that bring your golf ball up, down and all around. Other holes have a giant orange octopus, a labyrinth and a video game screen. It’s fun for the whole family and it also has a full bar. What’s better than that?
In local golf news, Patrick Steiner of the Windsor Golf Club tells me that if you buy a gift card at the Windsor GC pro shop or at Charlie’s Restaurant by Dec. 31 you’ll get an additional 10 percent put on the card. So if you spend $100 you’ll get a gift card worth $110. (Wow, my fifth grade math paid off.)
Patrick also wanted to remind me that head pro Jason Schmuhl made a hole in one during the Safeway Open at Silverado in the fall. His shot was the Golf Channel’s #2 top plays of the week. You can find the hole in one highlight on his Facebook page as well as YouTube.
Here are some excellent holiday promotions from Jason you can use as gifts or for yourself. One golf lesson is $75, two lessons are $130, and three lessons are $180. I think a playing lesson with Jason is the best deal. You or your gift recipient will play nine holes with him for $125 and that includes range balls, green fees and a cart. You’ll improve your swing and learn valuable course management skills. I can almost guarantee you’ll improve your scores. Get a hold of Jason Schmuhl at 480-5872 or [email protected].
LPGA Instructor extraordinaire Molly James is on the injured list for a few weeks after trying – but failing – to do a handstand at the gym recently. (I love Molly for being so young at heart). She offers almost exactly the same promotions as Jason and you can reach Molly at 591-3260 or [email protected].
My New Year’s resolution is to start hitting balls with my new prosthetic leg in January. I’ll start with wedges and go from there. I just need to make sure my son doesn’t give me a nudge.
