The Windsor summer football program officially got under way
last week as the team begins preparation for the fall campaign.
Last year, the Jaguars completed their most successful season
ever under head coach Jason Fayter, who led the team to a 7-4
record and its first-ever North Coast Section-3A playoff berth.
Entering his fourth season as varsity coach, Fayter has high
expectations for the squad this year.
³Everybody is fired up and we¹re looking forward to a very good
season,² said Fayter. ³The attitudes have been great and we have a
lot of depth this year. We think we¹ll be good enough to contend
for a league title and do well in the playoffs.²
The Jaguars will follow up a successful two-week spring camp in
May with an ambitious summer program that will include organized
weight training three or four days per week and lots of running. In
addition, the Jags will gather a couple of times per week for
informal workouts, with a speed camp planned for later in this
summer.
Next week, Windsor will participate in a five-day football camp
held at the University of Oregon in Eugene on June 25 through 29.
The camp, which the team took part in last year, includes 30 other
schools and will feature two scrimmages per day and a passing
tournament. Players will room together in a campus setting,
promoting team building and chemistry.
³We¹re bringing 30 kids up to Oregon this year,² Fayter noted.
³It¹s a good experience for us to get away and bond as a team.²
Windsor returns most of its offensive skill position players
from last season, including all-league seniors; quarterback Kevin
Cramer, running back Erik Hernandez and wide receiver Brandyn Reed,
three of the most talented players in the league. The Jags will run
an exciting, spread formation offense that figures to put a lot of
points on the board.
³The spread offense gives us a chance to utilize the players we
have,² Fayter said. ³We think Cramer is going to have a great
season with a year of experience under his belt.²
The biggest challenge facing the Jags will be on defense, where
they look to replace seven starters, including all-league
linebacker Joe Galvan and talented lineman David McCready.
³We may not be as big as we were last year, but we¹ve got 35
guys that are pretty solid,² Fayter said.
