The growing strength and depth of the Windsor Youth Softball
League was on display this month, as the U-10, U-12 and U-14 squads
turned in outstanding showings in their respective all-star
tournaments.
U-14s strike gold in Sonoma
The U-14 WYSL all-star team swept a tournament hosted by Sonoma
on June 3 and 4 to capture the championship. Also competing in the
tournament were Mark West, Rohnert Park, Sonoma Valley and West
County.
The team was coached by John Tyler, Scott Tolson, Kevin Maguire
and Joe Land and included: Seraphie Allen, Megan Badger, Katie
Delucchi, Megan Hunt, Lacey Land, Kayla Lowe, Courtney Lucchesi,
Cory Maguire, Christina Pierce, Ashlyn Tolson, Kayla Tyler and
Paige Williams.
U-12s win one of three in Sebastopol tourney
The Windsor U-12 squad, coached by Craig Curreri and Rich Locke,
posted one win in three outings in its all-star tournament played
in Sebastopol. In game one of the double-elimination tourney,
Windsor was smoked by eventual champion Rohnert Park, 20-7. Pitcher
Jenna Curreri tossed six innings and fanned one to take the
loss.
Windsor posted an 8-1 victory over Mark West in game two, with
pitcher Elizabeth Del Greco (6 IP, 13 Ks) notching the win for the
locals. In game three, Windsor fell to Sonoma Valley, 10-3 as
Lauren Flinn and Del Greco shared the pitching duties.
Windsor got outstanding defensive performances from catcher
Jessica Hutchinson and shortstop Isabel Argue in all three
tournament games. Leading hitters included: Elizabeth Hollis and
Flinn.
Rounding out the U-12 roster were: Charity Busa, Briana
Eldridge, Cameron Hollis, Amanda Locke and Alyssa Mendoza.
³This was a fantastic group of kids and it was a real privilege
to coach the team,² Coach Curreri said.
U-10s take second at Sonoma
The U-10 all-stars, led by coaches Ron Fiori, Jill Steiner and
Kevin Maguire, finished an outstanding second overall in their
double-elimination tournament played on June 10 and 11 in Sonoma.
The Windsor all-stars posted a pair of wins over Sonoma Valley, 9-3
and 8-1, but fell to eventual tourney champion Mark West, 2-0 and
6-0 in the title game.
Windsor pitcher Audrey Maguire starred in the opener, striking
out 15 batters in a six-inning, no-hitter in posting a 9-3 victory.
Sonoma scored all three of their runs on walks. Leading hitters for
the locals were: Megan Sieker (3 hits, RBI, 4 stolen bases),
Maguire (3 hits, 2B, 2 SBs) Stephany Del Greco (2 hits, 2 SBs),
Clair Flemming (hit, SB), Sophia Cody (hit, 2 RBIs) and Erika Kral
(2 RBIs).
Sieker was the Windsor pitcher of record in game two, fanning 12
batters but taking a tough 2-1 loss. Michelle Tyler drove in the
lone run for Windsor when she doubled home Sieker to tie the game.
Mark West pulled out the win with a run in the seventh. Rapping
hits for Windsor were: Del Greco (2), Sarah Fiori (2), Maguire,
Fleming and Rebecca Christani.
On Sunday, Windsor faced Sonoma Valley again in the tourney
semi-finals. Maguire started the game on the mound, but gave way to
Sieker (11 Ks) after the first inning and cruised to an 8-1 win.
Pacing the hitting corps were: Fiori (2 for 3), Maguire (1 for 3),
Tyler (2 for 3), Sara Lane (1 for 3), Cody (2 for 3), Fleming (1
for 3) and Jessica Mallie (1 for 2, 2B).
Windsor faced familiar foe Mark West in the title game, falling
6-0. Sieker and Maguire combined for 13 strikeouts in a good
effort. Top hitters were: Tyler (2), Fiori (2), Fleming (1), Del
Greco (1), Maguire (1) and Christani (1). Tyler turned in a gritty
effort as the catcher, taking a beating but playing the entire
game. Also contributing in the tournament were all-stars Coral
Alcala and Melany Duty.
