When it comes to summer hardball, thereĀ¹s no rest for the weary.
With all family vacations on hold, the Windsor Joe DiMaggio League
season is nearing the halfway point on the summer campaign, as the
Jags play five games per week until the season ends in mid
July.
At press time on June 18, the Jags (3-8) had just snapped an
eight-game losing skid with a victory at Sonoma in the opening game
of a twilight doubleheader against the Dragons.
Although wins are always a welcome commodity during the dog
days, the main objective for Windsor coach Wayne Welch is to
develop talent for the future and give returning players more reps.
ItĀ¹s also a great time to move players into different positions and
work on some of the nuances of the game that otherwise donĀ¹t get
enough attention.
The Jags began a flurry of games on June 10 in San Francisco
against Riordan, dropping both ends of a doubleheader, 6-2 and 8-7.
Pitcher Jake Spiegle took the loss in game one, while third baseman
Eric Griffin (3 for 4, 2B, 2 RBIs) led the Windsor hitting
corps.
Southpaw Kyle Thomas took a tough, 8-7 loss in the nightcap, but
there were plenty of offensive highlights to go around for the
Jags. First baseman Tommy Walton was the player of the game,
pounding out a pair of homers, including a grand slam, and drove in
all seven runs. Also swinging hot bats for Windsor were: Austin
Welch (2 for 4, 2B), John Tuscher (2 for 3, 2B) and Kyle Torquemada
(2 for 4).
On June 11, the Jags traveled to Willits for another double-dip,
falling, 7-6 and 12-9. John Pierce (2 for 4, 2B) and Tuscher (1 for
3, 2B) led the hitting corps in game one. Pacing the attack in a
high-scoring game two were: Griffin (2 for 5, 2B, 2 RBIs, 2 runs),
Torquemada (2 for 4, RBI, run), Walton (2 for 4, 2B, 3B, 2 RBIs),
Welch (2 for 4), Thomas (2 for 4) and Weston Gandt (2 for 3, 2
2Bs). Pitcher John Reed took the loss for the Jags.
On June 14, Windsor fell to visiting Sonoma, 6-4. Brad Merrell
took the loss, while Torquemada (1 for 3, run) and Walton (1 for 4,
3B, 2 RBIs) led the offense.
The Jaguars entertained Fugazi of San Francisco in a twin bill
on June 18, dropping both ends, 8-0 and 5-4 (nine innings).
Torquemada took the loss in the opener, as Matt Fortney (2 for 3),
Griffin (2 for 4), Welch (1 for 4), Thomas (1 for 4) and Pierce (1
for 3) hit safely for the Jags.
In the nightcap, Thomas tossed eight strong innings before
giving way to Brad Merrell in relief. Fugazi punched across the
winning run in the ninth to pull out the 5-4 victory. Leading
hitters included: Torquemada (3 for 4), Thomas (2 for 5, 3 RBIs)
and Fortney (1 for 4).
Windsor got back into the win column on FatherĀ¹s Day, taking the
opening game of a double-dip against Sonoma, 6-5. Starting pitcher
John Reed went the first four innings, before giving way to
eventual winner Weston Gandt in relief. Swinging heavy lumber for
the Jags were: Torquemada (2 for 3, 2 runs) Welch (2 for 3, 3 runs,
game-winning RBI), Thomas (3 for 4, 2B, run), Pierce (2 for 3) and
Merrell (1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBIs). There were no results available for
game two.
