The Windsor varsity Jags will make their first post-season
baseball appearance in three years this week after landing the
seventh seed in the North Coast Section 3A playoff tournament.
At press time, Windsor was preparing for a first-round playoff
game at second-seeded Montgomery on Tuesday. Should the Jags upset
the Vikings, they will take on the winner of the Maria
Carrillo-Analy game on Saturday, May 27.
The complete list of NCS 3A teams, in order of seeding, are:
Marin Catholic, Montgomery, Maria Carrillo, Casa Grande, Cardinal
Newman, Analy and Windsor.
The Jaguars (8-8, 9-8) secured the seventh and final spot by
virtue of their 7-1 win over Petaluma last week. Windsor¹s
scheduled game at Casa Grande on May 19 was rained out, throwing
yet another monkey wrench into the wild Sonoma County League
pennant chase.
The Jags¹ win over the Trojans may have kept them in the race,
but it was ultimately the weather that would have a big say in who
was crowned SCL champion.
Prior to Friday¹s rainout, the Jags were one of five teams that
still had a shot at a league crown, with the other four teams
needing a Windsor victory over Casa to remain alive. Friday¹s
cancellation eliminated Windsor, Healdsburg and El Molino and set
up a title game between Casa Grande and Analy. The Gauchos came
from behind to defeat the Tigers on Saturday, 4-3 to claim the
championship.
Windsor wrapped up the league campaign at El Molino on Saturday,
falling 6-3. The loss evened the Jags¹ league mark to 8-8, but
didn¹t diminish what the team accomplished during a red-hot month
of May.
³The rain really shut us down during the first half of the
season, but we won five of our last seven league games,² Windsor
coach Barney Kaufman noted. ³We started swinging the bats well and
got some solid pitching down the stretch. It was nice to see the
improvement in the team as the season went along.²
Although offensive stats can sometimes be deceiving, it was
Windsor¹s all-out hitting assault that led to the team¹s strong
league finish.
Windsor ended the SCL campaign with eight of its nine starters
hitting above the .300 mark. Offensive team leaders included: DH
Joe Mauney (.434), David Paulsen (.333, 6 2Bs, 2 HRs, 15 runs, 18
RBIs), Justin Coletti (.327, 15 runs, 10 SBs), Kevin Cramer (.391),
Jens Hagen (.375), Joe Van Cleave (.357), Anthony Fryar (.353, 17
runs, 9 SBs), Paul Keith (.333, .487 OBP) and Kyle May (.263, .429
OBP).
The pitching victories were evenly split between the team¹s top
four hurlers, which included: Cramer (2-0, 3.41), Paulsen (2-2,
4.10), Kyle Torquemada (2-1, 2.57) and Van Cleave (2-4, 4.05). The
Jags had a team ERA of 3.63 in league games.
Jags gain split
On May 17, the Jags turned back visiting Petaluma, 7-1 behind
five strong innings from starter and winning pitcher Kyle
Torquemada. Windsor erupted for five runs in the decisive sixth
inning to ice the win. Leading hitters included Fryar (2 for 4,
2B), Hagen (2 for 3, 2B), Keith (2 for 2), May (2 for 2), Mauney (2
for 4) and Coletti (2 for 4).
The bats were relatively quiet in Saturday¹s 6-3 loss in the
league finale at El Molino. Van Cleave went the first two innings
to take the loss, while Torquemada and Paulsen finished up in
mop-up duty. Pacing the Windsor attack were: Hagen (3 for 4, 2B),
Mauney (2 for 4, RBI) and Van Cleave (2 for 3).
