Hardball team sits on playoff bubble

The Jags¹ varsity baseball squad continued to pound the
horsehide last week as they gained an even split in a pair of
games.
The Windsor bats have been on fire in the past two weeks, with
the team averaging in double figures in both hits and runs.
The Jags wore out Sonoma pitching on Wednesday in a 14-4 romp
over the visiting Dragons but lost an eight-inning, 9-4
heartbreaker to Analy in a critical game on May 15. The split left
the Jaguars two games back of Casa Grande in the loss column at 7-7
with just three games remaining.
Windsor will also have a shot at a North Coast Section 3A
playoff berth following the conclusion of league play this week,
providing the team can remain above .500 for the season. At press
time the Jags were on the bubble with an overall record of 8-7,
with the NCS seeding meeting scheduled for this Sunday, May 22.
³With three games to go, we need to either win all three or go
2-1 to be eligible for the playoffs,² Windsor skipper Barney
Kaufman confirmed. ³We¹re Johnny all-staff this week and everybody
is available to pitch. As long as we can throw strikes and play
catch, we have a chance.²
Wednesday¹s home game with Sonoma was a no-doubter from the
start. Ace hurler Joe Van Cleave was staked to a six-run advantage
after two innings, and the Jags added another eight runs in the
final three innings to post the 10-run victory. Leading a
ferocious, 16-hit barrage were Joe Mauney (4 for 4, 2B, 3 RBIs),
Jens Hagen (4 for 4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBIs), Kevin Cramer (3 for 5, 2B,
RBI) and Anthony Fryar (2 for 4, 4 runs).
On Monday, the Jags were dealt a crushing blow to their SCL
title aspirations, as Analy (8-6, 10-8) broke a 4-4 deadlock in the
seventh to pull out a 9-4 decision in eight innings. Cramer tossed
six strong innings before giving way to Kyle Torquemada and David
Paulsen in relief. The Jags erased a 4-2 deficit with two runs off
of Analy starter Cameron Cook in the seventh inning, sending the
game into extra frames. The Tigers mounted the winning rally with a
pair of hits and two Windsor errors to plate five runs in the
eighth for the win. Cook notched the victory while Torquemada took
the loss for the Jags. Paul Keith led the attack with two hits in
four trips.
