The Windsor Little League Junior all stars gained a split in the
Section-1 tournament last weekend, as they posted a 16-3 win over
host Benicia on Friday, but fell, 7-6, in a heartbreaker to San
Francisco two nights later.
At press time, the District-35 champions were still alive and
preparing for a Monday, July 17 game in an effort to advance in the
double-elimination tournament. Another victory would set up a
doubleheader against undefeated San Francisco this week to
determine the Section champion.
³This is a good group of kids that never give up, and I think
we¹re as good as any team in this tournament,² said manager Randy
Lyman, assisted by coach Alan Alton. ³We played our best game so
far on Friday, but unfortunately, followed it up with our worst
game on Sunday.²
Windsor fireballer Cameron Southward climbed the hill in
Friday¹s 16-3 romp over Benecia, tossing five innings of one-hit
ball, while fanning one. Leading the offensive barrage were Michael
Hutchison (4 for 4), Jacob Welch (3 for 3), Craig Lyman (2 for 3),
Southward (2 for 2), Michael Campbell (1 for 2, 2B, 3 RBIs) and
Steven Hutchison (1 for 2).
Pitcher Dylan Ghadiri took the mound against San Francisco on
Sunday, firing five innings and yielding just one earned run.
Trailing 6-4 in the sixth inning, Windsor clawed back with a pair
of runs to knot the game at six-apiece, sending it into extra
innings. San Francisco eventually punched across the game-winner in
the eighth to pull out the 7-6 win. Swinging hot bats for the
locals were Welch (2 for 4), DJ King (2 for 4), Marcus Begley (2
for 4), Steven Hutchison (1 for 4, 3B, 3 RBIs) and Ghadiri (1 for
4).
Rounding out the Windsor all-star roster are: Kevin Oechslin,
Jordan Winkler and Ethan Warren.
