Things will be heating up in the Smith Robinson Gymnasium this
weekend as the Lady Greyhounds¹ summer basketball team gets set to
host the annual Summer Heat hoops tournament July 28-30. The
tournament includes 16 teams and serves as the program¹s biggest
fundraiser of the year.
This year¹s tourney will feature visiting squads from Eureka,
Ursuline, St. Patrick¹s, Las Plumas, Terra Nova, Windsor, Elsie
Allen, Sonoma, Terra Linda, Kelseyville, McKinleyville, Novato,
Analy, San Marin and a pair of Healdsburg teams.
The teams will be split into four pools of four teams each, with
pool play determining the top two squads which move on to the red
(winner¹s) bracket. The bottom two teams in each pool will play in
the blue (consolation) bracket. The championship game is scheduled
for Sunday, July 30 at 4 p.m.
³This is the strongest field of teams we¹ve had in years,² said
Healdsburg coach and Tournament Director Sal Costanzo. ³Any one of
about five teams has a chance to win it.²
As in past years, games will be played in both Smith Robinson
Gymnasium (SRG) and Frost Hall on the HHS campus.
The Healdsburg-2 squad opens up on Friday in SRG against Analy
at 11 a.m. followed by Healdsburg-1 vs. Elsie Allen at noon. On
Friday afternoon, Healdsburg-2 entertains Terra Linda at 4 p.m. in
Frost Hall while Healdsburg-1 follows against San Marin at 5
p.m.
Saturday¹s scheduled pool games continue with Healdsburg-2
against McKinleyville at 10 a.m. in SRG followed by Healdsburg-1 at
11.
The Summer Heat marks the end of a busy summer campaign for the
Lady Hounds, who have also played in tournaments in Chico,
McKinleyville and San Diego.
³We¹ve had an unbelievable summer so far,² noted Costanzo. ³We
won eight of nine games in Chico, took third in McKinleyville and
despite missing several key players, did very well in San Diego
last week.²
