The two-time defending champion Lady Jags varsity soccer team
got a taste of just how hard it may be to achieve a three-peat in
the Sonoma County League. On Monday, the ladies opened the SCL
campaign with a hard fought, 1-1 overtime tie with visiting
Analy.
³We really want to win league again,² said junior forward Ashley
Freyer, whose freshman sister Carrie also starts for the team. ³We
want to keep it going for our young players.²
The league opening tie with Analy came on the heels of a solid,
2-0 loss to Montgomery last week in Windsor¹s pre-season finale, a
final prep for what looks like a challenging push for a third
straight league crown. After playing to a scoreless tie at the
half, the Lady Vikings pulled it out with a pair of second-half
goals.
The loss to nationally ranked Montgomery was a positive step for
the Lady Jags in their quest for elite status in the NCS power
rankings, and demonstrated how close the team has come in the last
few years.
³I definitely think we¹re closing the gap with Montgomery,² said
Windsor coach Juan Orozco. ³We just need to tighten up the middle
and finish our scoring opportunities.²
Monday¹s league opener against a much-improved Analy squad was a
physical battle from the start, leading to three yellow cards
issued to Windsor players in the first half. Both teams knocked at
the door throughout opening period, but the Lady Tigers drew first
blood to take a 1-0 lead at the break.
Windsor stepped up its intensity after intermission, finally
finding the net after several near misses to send it into overtime.
The teams battled through a pair of scoreless overtime periods to
end the contest deadlocked at one-apiece.
Next up for the Lady Jags is a home clash with Casa Grande next
Wednesday, Sept. 20. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
