The Greyhound varsity boy¹s soccer team wrapped up a strong
pre-season campaign last Thursday with an exciting, 3-2
come-from-behind win over visiting Montgomery.
Healdsburg¹s win over a strong Viking contingent stamped the
squad as one of the teams to beat in a strong Sonoma County League
this year, as well as a major player in the NCS post-season
dance.
³I thought we played really well as a team, especially after the
first 15 minutes,² said Hounds coach Rob Perman, who cited the
outstanding play of center-midfielder Alex Sarabi as a key to the
win. ³Our offense has been pretty good and it¹s just a matter of us
playing defense against the good teams. Beating Montgomery was a
good confidence boost for the team.²
Healdsburg got off to a slow start against the Vikings on
Thursday, allowing a goal on a broken play 10 minutes into the
contest. Montgomery fought off several Greyhound scoring threats to
maintain a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Hounds stepped up the intensity after intermission, as Juan
Martinez tallied an unassisted goal to knot the game at one-apiece.
The Vikings fought back with a goal to regain the lead at 2-1.
Moments later, Healdsburg went to its strength as senior Kory
Hirtzer found the net on a header off of a perfectly placed corner
kick from Mario Gonzalez to knot the game at 2-2. The teams battled
into the waning minutes before Gonzalez broke free to score the
game-winner with two minutes left in regulation, lifting the Hounds
to a 3-2 win.
At press time, the defending co-champion Greyhounds (4-2-1),
were preparing to open the SCL season on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at
Windsor. Healdsburg will play host to visiting Casa Grande tonight
(Sept. 14) at HHS, followed by a road clash at Petaluma on Tuesday,
Sept. 19. Game times for the JV and varsity are 5 and 7 p.m.
JV make it a clean sweep over Vikings
The Healdsburg JV boys squad (2-3-1) completed a soccer sweep
with a 2-1 win over Montgomery on Thursday. Ray Carrillo scored
both goals for the Greyhounds, assisted by Frankie Renteria.
