The Analy varsity football squad opened the fall campaign in
winning fashion on Friday, easily defeating the visiting Piner
Prospectors, 26-0 at Karlson Field.
Analy dominated the Prospectors in nearly every phase of the
game, most notably on offense, where the underrated Tiger O-line
gave senior quarterback Nick Maloney time to find the open man,
while running backs Cameron Cook and AJ Fox did the bulk of the
work on the ground. The Analy defense was equally impressive, led
by run stopping linebackers Dominic Patrick and Alex Houlemard and
defensive backs Mike Crivello and Kyle Molkenbuhr. With most local
pigskin pundits picking the Tigers as one of the favorites in the
SCL race this year, Analy opened the season carrying the burden of
high expectations. The team responded with a workmanlike effort,
which could have been more lopsided had they converted on all of
their scoring chances.
³I think we played pretty well, even though we didn¹t capitalize
on a lot of our scoring opportunities,² said Tigers coach Chip
Castleberry. ³Our main concerns coming in were the offensive line
and our defense, so we were happy with the way the guys
played.²
Maloney had the Tigers on the march midway through the first
quarter when he found receiver Nick Johnson on a 26-yard scoring
strike. AJ Fox converted the PAT kick for a 7-0 lead. Analy drew
blood again early in the second period as talented wide-out Kyle
Molkenbuhr took a handoff on a reverse and scampered 13 yards for
the score, giving the Tigers a 14-0 halftime bulge.
Analy effectively iced the game late in the third quarter when
defender Juan Moreno busted through to block a punt deep in Piner
territory, pouncing on the ball in the end zone for a 20-0 Tiger
advantage. Analy capped the scoring barrage in the final period
when Maloney hooked up with Daniel Albert on a 15-yard strike for
the eventual 26-0 win.
Maloney turned in a solid night¹s work with seven completions in
12 attempts for 114 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Backup
quarterback Joey Maloney (Nick¹s brother) also saw some action
(1-2, 26 yards). Other offensive leaders were: Cook (11-54 yards
rushing) and Fox (3-42 yards rushing), Molkenbuhr (2-12 yards, TD
rushing) and Johnson (3-54 yards, TD receiving).
Leading tacklers were: Molkenbuhr (6 tackles), Patrick (4
tackles, 2 assists, 2 sacks), Houlemard (3 tackles), Fox, (3
tackles, 2 assists), Mike Crivello (4 tackles, assist), Moreno (3
tackles, assist, blocked punt, TD), Josh Cota (2 tackles, 2
assists), Brian Friedman (tackle, 2 assists) and two tackles each
from Wells, Dawe and Torres.
Next up is a road clash with powerful Archbishop Mitty
this Friday, Sept.15.

JV trounce Piner, 51-21

points in the second quarter, got touchdowns from Vince Scurini
(3), Joe Abell (2), Jake Gans, Jake Williams and Isreal Perales.
