The boys varsity Jaguar soccer squad is in the final throes of
the pre-season campaign, with the tough Sonoma County League season
set to open this week.
The Jags had a pair of games on the docket last week, but saw
their scheduled game against Rancho Cotate on Tuesday reduced to a
scrimmage after the referees failed to show up. On Wednesday,
Windsor battled to a 3-3 tie with Willits.
The tie with visiting Willits was a bittersweet contest, as the
Jags led most of the way, only to give up three late goals in the
second half.
The Jags, in a solid defensive outing, had Willits on the ropes
as they built a commanding, 3-0 lead with just 15 minutes left in
the game. Windsor got goals from Saul Ochoa, Travis Ibarra and Kyle
Torquemada, with assists going to Jose Angel and Chad
Carpenter.
The Wolverines battled back in the waning minutes, taking
advantage of a couple of Windsor defensive mistakes that yielded
goals off of penalty and direct kicks. Willits tallied the tying
goal with time running out on a set play to send the game into
overtime deadlocked at three apiece. The teams played a pair of
scoreless 10-minute overtime periods to end the game in a tie.
³I thought that except for the last 15 minutes, our defense
played extremely well,² said Windsor coach Tomas Acuna, citing the
fine play of defender David Mendez and goalie Tomas Salinas.
³Overall, we were very happy with the effort.²
At press time, the Jags (0-1-1) were preparing to wrap up the
pre-season with a game against Ukiah on Sept. 5 before kicking off
the SCL campaign tonight (Sept. 7) at home against Analy. Game
times for the JV and varsity are 5 and 7 p.m.
