Things are heating up for West County girls varsity soccer
teams, as both the Lady Lions and Tigers turned in strong efforts
in SCL games last week.
Lady Lions roar at Sonoma
The Lady Lions (2-3, 1-2) began the week with a disappointing,
5-0 loss to visiting Petaluma on Wednesday. El Mo could not seem to
get it going against a suddenly hot Lady Trojan team that had
suffered a 1-0 loss to the Lions in the pre-season.
El Mo rebounded in a big way on Friday at Sonoma, as they
blanked a much-improved Lady Dragon squad, 2-0. Brittny Escamilla
got the Lions on the board with great shot for a goal off an assist
from Katie Havstad in the first half. Sonoma had a chance to tie,
but couldn¹t convert on a PK attempt, sending El Mo to the break up
1-0.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Hilary Sparks drilled a
ball off of a defender and into the net from six yards out to give
the Lions a 2-0 advantage. The El Mo defense and goalie Sheena Urie
made the lead stick the rest of the way to post the shutout.
Lady Tigers force tie with Casa
The Analy varsity girls (3-5-2, 0-1-2) continue to be the
surprise team of the SCL this year, giving teams all they can
handle each game. The Lady Tigers began the week on Monday by
playing two-time defending champion Windsor to a 1-1 tie.
On Wednesday, the Tigers played undefeated, league-leading Casa
Grande to another 1-1 tie. Credit Emily Schuster with an unassisted
goal for Analy. Again, the Lady Tigers played through a pair of
scoreless overtime periods to end the game deadlocked at 1-1. The
game came at a high price for Analy, as goalie Ashley Erdmann
suffered a broken hand and was lost for six weeks. Backup goalie
Breanna Varnadore also sustained a back injury in the game, but is
expected to play this week.
Analy played a rare afternoon game at Petaluma on Saturday, as
junior Emily Wells got the start in goal for the Tigers. The Lady
Trojans scored twice and fought off a couple of good scoring
chances by the Tigers in the first half, and then hung on to
preserve a 2-0 win.
³After playing two overtime games on Monday and Wednesday, I
think exhaustion caught up with us on Saturday,² said Analy coach
Joseph Heil. ³Losing Ashley and Breanna doesn¹t help, but I think
we¹ve gone through the tough part of the schedule and now things
will settle down for us a little bit.²
The Lady Lions will entertain the Tigers on Friday, Sept. 22 at
4 p.m. in Forestville, followed by the JV game at 5:30 p.m.
