It¹s often said that when it comes to sports, statistics can be
deceiving. The same can be said for season records ‹ especially
when talking about this year¹s varsity Jags soccer team.
The Windsor boy¹s squad (1-6-1, 1-3) finally had something to
show for their efforts last Tuesday, as it posted its first win of
the 2006 campaign with a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Casa Grande.
The Jags followed up their victory with a superb effort against
league-leading Petaluma two nights later, falling in overtime,
2-1.
³Our guys are upbeat and having fun,² said Windsor coach Tomas
Acuna. ³They feel they¹re playing well and now we know we can run
with the big dogs.²
The Jaguars have every reason to be upbeat this season,
engineering one of the best high school soccer turnarounds in
recent memory. Windsor has played every game with playoff
intensity, with five of its six losses being decided by two goals
or less. Three of those games have gone to overtime, but until last
week those efforts had gone unrewarded.
The drought finally ended on Tuesday at Casa Grande as Windsor
took a 2-1 lead at the half on goals from Kyle Torquemada and Jose
Angel. The Gauchos stormed back with two unanswered goals early in
the second half, but the Jags didn¹t flinch. Torquemada, in the
midst of a hat trick, struck again to knot the game at 3-3, and
Angel put the team up to stay at the 30-minute mark. Torquemada
added an insurance tally late in the contest to ice the 5-3 win.

The Jags entertained first-place Petaluma on Thursday, giving
the league-leaders all they could handle before falling 2-1 in the
final minutes of overtime. In a tremendous defensive effort,
Hernandez found the net to knot the game at 1-1 at the half.
Neither team could break through in an intensely played second half
sending the game to a pair of ten-minute overtime periods.
The game came down to the final minutes of the second overtime,
as the Trojans finally scored with just a couple of minutes left to
escape with a 2-1 win.
³We came into this game knowing we could score, and after
playing Petaluma we know we can also defend,² said Acuna, who was
particularly impressed with the fine play of defenders Hector
Garcia and David Mendez. ³The entire team defended well.²
Next up for the Jags is a home clash with El Molino tonight
(Sept. 28), followed by a road game next Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Analy.
The JV and varsity play at 5 and 7 p.m.
