It¹s been a tough year for the defending co-champion Lady
Greyhound varsity soccer team, with the team battling injuries and
offensive woes all season.
That trend continued last week, as Healdsburg dropped a pair of
league games to Petaluma, 3-0 and Sonoma, 7-0. The losses left the
ladies with an overall season record of 2-8 and 0-3 in league
play.
³We played hard against Petaluma and even though they beat us,
we were still in the fight,² said Healdsburg coach Herbert Lemus.
³But our loss to Sonoma was very disappointing, not because we
lost, but because of a lack of effort.²
The Lady Hounds traveled to face a red-hot Petaluma squad on
Wednesday, falling behind, 2-0 after the Trojans converted a corner
kick late in the first half. Petaluma added a second-half goal to
post a 3-0 win. Credit goalie Tianna Barbier with an outstanding
outing for Healdsburg.
The ladies turned in a thoroughly forgettable outing at Sonoma
on Friday, as the surprising Lady Dragons surged to a 2-0 halftime
lead. The floodgates opened after intermission, as Sonoma striker
Katie Benz led an all-out assault on the Healdsburg net to post a
7-0 win. Benz ended the afternoon with five goals, as Sonoma
improved to 2-2 in league and 8-3 overall.
³One of our players said it was embarrassing to lose 7-0,² said
Lemus. ³We just showed a lack of character against Sonoma, which
was not acceptable. Hopefully, our girls will learn from this
experience.²
